There’s a famous story about Pablo Picasso.
A woman approaches Picasso in a restaurant and asks him to sketch her portrait on a napkin.
He takes a pencil, draws a few quick lines, and within seconds the portrait is finished.
“Ten thousand francs,” he says.
Shocked, the woman replies:
“But that only took you a minute!”
Picasso smiles and says:
“No, madam… it took me forty years.”
The same is true here.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu may look simple — one submission, one movement, one transition.
But behind every detail are years of work, mistakes, repetition, and understanding.
That is the difference between watching and understanding.
My name is Zoran Jovanovic.
I have spent more than 40 years in the world of martial arts.
My journey began with karate, continued through boxing and full contact, then moved into Real Aikido, Wing Chun, and Kali Eskrima.
Each of those martial arts gave me a piece of the puzzle.
But it was only through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that everything came together.
Not as a collection of techniques, but as a system of principles.
My goal is not simply to teach techniques, but to help you understand the principles behind them — why they work, how they work, and how to use them in any situation.
BJJ Gear & Wisdom is not just another blog.
This is a place where:
experience matters more than theory
principles matter more than techniques
quality matters more than quantity
You will not find quick fixes here.
You will find what truly works.
That includes not only the sport side of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but also the principles of real self-defense — when to act, why to act, and how to think under pressure.
My goal is to help you understand not only what to do, but why it works in the real world.
On this site, I will share with you:
strategies that help you progress faster
gear recommendations with real value
principles that apply both on the mat and in everyday life
No unnecessary complexity.
No empty promises.
This is not a site that tries to impress.
This is a site that tries to help.
If you are a beginner, you will save yourself years of frustration.
If you are more advanced, you will recognize things you have already felt — but never knew how to explain.
Over the years, I have also learned from instructors such as Robin Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Rickson Gracie, and Marcus Flexa, along with many other outstanding martial artists and teachers.
Karate and boxing — several years of foundational training
Full Contact — many years of experience and development
Real Aikido — years of study
Wing Chun and Kali Eskrima — long-term exploration of principles and techniques
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu — years of study and continuous improvement
The Gracie Combatives program — an experience that changed the way I understand BJJ and self-defense

BJJ Gear & Wisdom is more than just a resource for Jiu Jitsu practitioners; it is a project built on ancient samurai principles. Behind this platform stands the Digital Bushido Master—a digital marketing entity guided by the core tenets of the Bushido code: honor, precision, and relentless discipline.
Just as a BJJ practitioner dedicates themselves to mastering leverage and technique on the mats, we apply that same martial arts philosophy to the digital world.
When you read our guides or use our recommendations, you can trust they are created with one ultimate goal: to bring genuine value to your BJJ journey.
